Homicides and Property Crime Up in San Bernardino in 2012

FBI crime statistics released in mid-September showed that the number of homicides and property crimes in the city of San Bernardino had significant year-over-year increases in the year of 2012, the San Bernardino County Sun recently reported. The surrounding cities of Redlands and Ontario also had increases in property crime, according to the news story.

Property crime rose by 24% from 2011 to 2012, with Pomona experiencing a 13% increase and Redlands experience a 14% increase. In comparison, there was a 0.9% decrease of property crimes on a nationwide scale. In the news story, San Bernardino's assistant police chief attributed the increase of the city's property crimes to "personnel cuts and significant restructuring."

For the year of 2012, 47 homicides are reported as occurring in San Bernardino, which marked a 56% from 2011. (Since the start of 2013, there have already been 30 homicides within this city.) Many of the homicides in 2012 are said to have involved gang violence and drugs. Meanwhile, there were 17 homicides in Pomona in 2012—a 54% increase when compared to 2011. According to an article published in The New York Times, San Bernardino's violent crime levels had been steadily decreasing over the years before the city's spike in homicides occurred. The article focused on the fact that the city's filing of bankruptcy led to cuts in its police force.

Crime is definitely an issue that cities need to address. It is important, however, to remember that not everyone who is accused of committing a crime actually deserves a finding of guilt. No matter how much crime increases within a community, anyone accused of a criminal offense should still receive fair treatment by law enforcement and a fair trial within the court system.
